Position Summary: 

 

The Distribution Center Director is responsible for leading and delivering world class expense and service results from Regional Distribution Centers.  This individual will be responsible for all aspects of the distribution of customer orders within a multi-state region.  This position manages a diverse work force in both limited and highly automated environments.  He/she will be responsible for the execution of continuous improvement initiatives that requires working with various lines of business and departments within the home office.

 

This role will be responsible for attracting and developing talent with diverse capabilities.  Development includes both management and hourly work forces with emphasis on organizational development, talent management, and leadership training.  Also, he/she will be the leader of making their operations a Great Place to Work and the employer of choice in that market.  Creating an atmosphere of open communications that supports our Staples Values is critical to achieving our goal.  Furthermore, developing solid business partnerships with the following teams are paramount to providing the perfect order to our customers: Contract, SBD, Quill, Promotional Products, Print Solutions, Technology Solutions, Facility Solutions, Furniture and Retail (Kiosk sales).  Additional partnerships are required with Asset Protection, Safety and Human Resources to comply with company policies and local, state, and federal regulations.

 

This position reports to the Vice president of Fulfillment and Delivery and interfaces with the Senior Vice President, Supply Chain & Logistics, Vice Presidents of Merchandise Planning & Inventory Management, Loss Prevention, Inbound Logistics, Third Party Operations, Global Supply Chain, Contract Sales, SBD Sales, Quill Sales and Human Resources. 

 

Primary Responsibilities:

 

Responsible for planning, developing and executing the requirements associated with operating a large Staples’ multi-channel Distribution Center.  Implements distribution best practices across the network and ensures consistent execution in order to achieve expense and service level objectives for each business unit (Contract, SBD, Quill, Promotional Products, Print Solutions, Technology Solutions, Facility Solutions, Furniture and Retail Kiosks).  Responsible for attracting, retaining and developing industry leading distribution executive talent and for developing a Great Place to Work culture in each location for all levels of associates and for both union and non-union facilities.  Also responsible for achieving turnover and pulse survey goals as they relate to the region’s workforce and for ensuring appropriate bench strength is in place at all times.  Responsible for maintaining and protecting Staples’ infrastructure assets as it relates to facility maintenance, security, loss prevention and public relations (when required).  Leads efforts to develop strong cross-functional relationships with customers, suppliers, sales associates and other corporate functional areas within their assigned region in order to achieve the business plan.  Participates in customer sales presentations as required.


Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree is preferred

  • 10-15 years managing functional areas of logistics/supply chain
  • Proven leader with 10 – 15 years prior experience managing.  Preferably in a complex multi-channel, multi-location Distribution and Delivery multi-state distribution network
  • Self-starter who accepts responsibility and continually wants more, as well as exhibiting strong emotional intelligence, doing what is right, not what is easy; strong ethical standards
  • Experience with large integrations including but not limited to:  Distribution Systems, Transportation Systems and multiple opening, closing and consolidations of Distribution and Delivery operations
  • Consistent track record of building, developing and leading teams that deliver superior results while making it a great place to work for both management and associates
  • Demonstrated results and team-based leadership qualities in areas of direct responsibility and in providing customer value added processes working in a multi-channel, environment when leading by influence is critical
  • Strong working knowledge of best in class work methods and material handling design concepts in large-scale automated distribution / fulfillment and delivery buildings is essential
  • Experience with multiple types of material handling systems including but not limited to:  Pick to Light, Pick to Voice, Cart Picking, Paper picking and Robotic systems
  • Prior experience with unions as well as union avoidance
