Staples is looking for a Principal Software Engineer in the Supply Chain space to manage incident recovery activities including working with on-site and off-shore support teams, coordinating vendor engagement, and driving improved stability through root cause analysis and preventative actions and dashboard development.  This Principal Software Engineer is a hands-on developer who combines excellent organization skills, technical knowledge, and a passion for operational excellence.  This role is responsible to establish monitoring in support of production issues and proactively adding system monitoring.  The successful candidate will be able to handle and prioritize multiple high priority tasks and ensure the right level of effort, resources and communications are applied. 

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Accountable to achieve exceptional service and support of all Supply Chain software applications and systems including root cause identification and solution recommendation
  • Perform software engineering to create and modify highly complex applications and systems monitoring solutions where performance, efficiency, and reliability are critical to the entire system
  • Develop and enhance stability dashboard reports using Application Performance Monitoring (APM) software – CA APM Introscope
  • Develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of Staples North American Delivery business/system processes
  • Ensure all areas of responsibility are fully operational, maintaining stability, reliability, and sustainability
  • Communicate to higher levels of management and be capable of articulating the current landscape or recommend suitable next steps during these issues 
  • Ownership of building working relationships with our business partners, development engineers and Problem Management teams for driving for resolution of complex issues
  • Drive accurate and timely incident data capture
  • Participate in root cause analysis efforts and plan projects and enforce process that increases stability and reduces mean time to recover 
  • Work with end-customers and customer liaisons to understand system pain points and identify and manage projects to address. 
  • Ensure technical documentation relating to incident recovery steps is centrally managed with document control. 
  • Organize regular status calls with application teams to review incidents.
  • Manage escalations from end-users.
  • Understand true value of business initiatives, process and or strategies. Must work with the business to understand their process and identify critical areas of concerns
  • Work the hours needed during critical production related issues. This may require assembling a SWAT team to address a particular problem during the day or after hours. 

Required Skills: 
  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a related domain
  • 5+ years of technical development experience required using Unix/Linux, Perl Scripting, SQL
  • 5+ years of experience in all phases of the system development life cycle
  • Experience with Application Performance Monitoring (APM) software – CA APM Introscope
  • Strong working knowledge of DB/2 database design
  • Experience with monitoring tools and the core understanding of preventative alerts and actions prior to production related impacts
  • Strong data analysis and problem solving skills 
  • Working knowledge of MQ series
  • Demonstrated focus on Operational Excellence.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 

Preferred Skills: 
  • Master’s degree in Computer Engineering or related field  and 6 years’ experience
  • Experience in Agile Development process
  • Familiarity with project tracking and knowledge management tools including Jira and Confluence
  • Self-starter, high-energy, with ability to execute on business objectives
  • Ability to foster innovation among team members and drive best practices
  • Knowledge of AS400 systems and troubleshooting
