Position Summary:

The primary responsibility of the Director of Platform Operations will be to maintain the highest level of availability for Staples business critical applications.  In the pursuit of this objective, this key leader will drive maturity in DevOps principles and tooling as well as own the 24x7x365 support of a critical portfolio of applications including the ecommerce, merchandising, marketplace, mobile and kiosk functions.  This includes the building of a world-class cloud application monitoring framework, relentlessly driving efficiencies in the DevOps practice and working to develop robust automation patterns that drive material business value through higher levels of velocity.  Additionally, the ideal candidate will maintain a collaborative partnership with key stakeholders within the Application Development, Platform and Cloud Engineering/Operations, and Cyber Security organization.  This is a highly visible role and will be crucial to the success of Staples business goals.  The ideal candidate must have a proven track record leading world class operations and performance engineering teams as well as a demonstrated expertise in driving DevOps principles and tooling.  We are looking for an experienced technical leader who wants to grow their career and who will help drive the future transformation of this critical technology ecosystem.

Primary Responsibilities
 
  • Provide 24 X 7 x 365 operations for all critical Staples applications 
  • Track and drive down Mean Time to Resolve (MTTR) and Mean Time to Detect (MTTD) KPIs across the application portfolio
  • Be relentless in the pursuit of application stability and performance
  • Lead and coach a high-performing Operations Team - act as an effective people manger, supporting morale, engagement and career development
  • Help to build a collaborative DevOps strategy and partnership with local and remote development and infrastructure teams
  • Lead DevOps & Tooling development for the Enterprise; including:  critical application portfolio, public cloud and on-premise infrastructure 
  • Develop automation strategy and roadmaps to support holistic automation testing covering entire lifecycle for projects/engagements based on the technical analysis, complexity and reusability
  • Focus on the development and maturation of the QA automation and DevOps app automation efforts
  • Regular engagement with the release engineering team to integrate test execution, automation and reporting through the CI/CD process
  • Work closely with business and technology executives to develop platforms vision, strategy and execution plans that are aligned with business outcomes.
  • Be the decision maker for platform operational issues and ensure objectives are effectively achieved and provide input to strategy setting.
  • Maintain strong SLAs and KPIs (business metrics) for the application platforms primarily focusing on ecommerce, merchandising and marketplace areas
  • Establish a continuous improvement plan for Platform Operations, including technology reviews, root cause analysis, after action reports analysis and application portfolio reviews in order to ensure adequate operating environments for critical applications
  • Develop a strong and positive culture of ownership amongst onshore and offshore teams and drive inter-department communication and collaboration
  • Partner with and influence stakeholders to promote automation, simplification, standardization and innovation and to ensure risks are understood and minimized
  • Champion the platform strategy in moving applications from legacy systems into open source technologies in the cloud
  • Provide clear direction and roadmap for the next generation monitoring, experimental testing, service management and governance and effective KPI/SLA management
  • Strong technical depth and vision for ecommerce into developing the next generation platforms for scalability/reliability
  • Focus on Innovation on how to enable/motivate the team in bringing in tech focus and experimenting ideas
  • Champion security in the operational systems, processes and policies within the application ecosystem
  • Continually evaluate new opportunities for improved operational excellence through internal technical and operational optimization and third-party relationships 


Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
 
  • Bachelor’s degree plus 15years of experience in a related field
  • 5 years’ experience in a software development or QA leadership role
  • Outstanding people management experience (managed 20 + people including managers)
  • Demonstrated leadership ability 
  • Has relentlessly high standards (is never satisfied with the status quo)
  • Highly developed mentoring and team building skills
  • At least 5 years of hands-on technical experience
  • Ecommerce experience
  • Financial responsibility against a minimum $5M budget
  • Highly developed negotiation, facilitation and consensus building skills
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills; strong presentation skills
  • Hands on experience with test automation tools such as Silk or Selenium
  • Hands on experience with open source automation tools such as Ansible or Puppet
  • Hands on experience with modern monitoring tools such as Splunk, Nagios, CloudWatch or Prometheus
  • Adept at conducting research into operational-related issues
  • Outstanding problem-solving skills

 
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with modern cloud technologies including Microsoft Azure, AWS and GCP
  • Experience with modern development methodologies such as 12 Factor applications, Microservices
  • Experience developing on a modern object-oriented language like Java, Python or C#
  • Experience managing Unix/Linux and Windows systems in production 
  • Experience working in configuration management 
  • Experience writing code to create automated solutions 
  • Couchbase, ElasticSearch, MongoDB, PostreSQL
