Network Security Architect

Responsible for strategic planning, architecture, high level design, security, and optimization of the Staples IP network. Set standards and architecture for all aspects of the IP network. Ensure that architecture and standards remain current and are adhered to. Work with other architecture groups to ensure systems, applications, and connectivity are deployed securely and adheres to security and compliance policies. Support the network architecture needs of the business and our partners. Work with the Security Policy group to improve security policies by filling gaps and providing subject matter expertise. Facilitate progress of projects as a subject matter expert, working within and outside of the System Engineering area.

Evaluate network security technologies with a focus on developing solution design to improve stability, performance, scalability, and flexibility.  Key areas of focus will be network and security architecture, solution designs enabling stability, consolidation, manageability, and advances in future technologies.

Major Accountability:
  • Network design and architecture
  • Overall project development activities and successful implementation
  • Communication to project management and IT management
  • Assessment and recommendation regarding the overall infrastructure health
  • Create and maintain detailed design and support documentation
  • Research new tools and technologies
  • Knowledge transfer to supporting teams (turn-over)

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Design and implement secure network infrastructure for critical applications
  • Define infrastructure requirements for the implementation of new applications
  • Work in collaboration with other departments or organizations to develop and analyze systems in support of their projects or mission, then upgrade or enhance the infrastructure to meet their requirements
  • Lead projects and efforts that require specialized infrastructure skills
  • Work with the various project stakeholders to facilitate implementation and completion of the projects
  • May act as project manager in area of expertise
  • Lead in the evaluation of new products and services
  • Provide 3rd level technical support for complex production systems and services
  • Identify areas where existing policies and procedures require change or where new ones need to be developed; maintain all relevant documentation
  • Participate in related industry organizations and special interest groups
  • Limited travel 

Basic Qualifications: 
  • 8+ years of experience in Network Design and / or Network Security
  • Experience with enterprise network security technologies including firewalls, IDS, IPS, WAF, and Web Proxies
  • Experience with TCP/IP and common network protocols 
  • Experience with routing, switching, and IP subnetting
  • Experience with OSI Reference Model layers 1 – 7 
  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems
  • CISSP, GIAC, and / or other technical certifications highly desirable
  • Experience with virtualization technologies, Cisco networking technologies, Application Network Services including SLB, GSLB, and Application Acceleration technologies
  • Experience with data center LAN and WAN design
  • Experience with WLAN design a plus
  • Experience performing detailed Risk Assessments 
  • Technical writing experience 
  • Strong troubleshooting skills including detailed packet capture and analysis
  • Ecommerce background desired
  • Proficient knowledge of project management methodologies and or leading large technical projects
  • Demonstrate strong communication and inter-personal skills 
  • Proven ability to succeed in a multi-task, team-oriented environment 
  • Demonstrated ability to pay close attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with limited supervision
